About the South Side

A short distance across the river from downtown Pittsburgh, the South Side provides easy access to Pittsburgh’s many universities, business and technical schools. The area is steeped in history, shaped by commerce and tooled by tradition.

Lined from one end to the other with interesting shopping, innovative dining and great entertainment, the South Side offers much to explore and is a great place to call home. As its name suggests, it is located immediately to the south of downtown Pittsburgh, across the Monongahela River. The South Side is divided into two primary sections: The Flats, which are on level ground, and the Slopes, which occupy the adjacent hill and often provide panoramic river and city views. Each area is dotted with renovated homes, row houses, schools and churches that have been converted into fabulous condominium buildings, single-family homes and townhomes.

The South Side is an up-and-coming area only minutes from downtown Pittsburgh. Its main road, East Carson Street, is a wonderful place to explore during the day and even more vibrant at night, with numerous small shops, bars and restaurants. Home to residents of all ages, Southside is a diverse and culturally booming area.
